Best Hospitals in Quintana Roo (Mexico) and Why

Many foreign residents of Riviera Maya are retirees who have chosen this paradise as their new home. Many have also brought with them the aches and pains of aging or a pre-existing condition that requires care. Others seem to develop these ailments over time. There are many laws that govern this aging process. The two that immediately come to mind are Murphy’s Law and the Law of Averages. Following these laws, there will come a time when a visit to the hospital is inevitable. But the main question is Which are the Hospitals in Quintana Roo?

So, when the time comes, which is the best hospital in the Riviera Maya? Well, let’s take a look!

What Are My Choices In Hospitals?

Yes, it’s true that you now live elsewhere, but don’t expect to find a St. Elsewhere! Or a Chicago Hope or even a New Amsterdam. And if you run into a doctor named Doogie or a nurse Jackie you may want to get a second opinion!

As we discussed in my previous article, Health Insurance Programs in Mexico, there are three major Hospital providers in the Riviera Maya, with a fourth in Cancun only. Hospiten, AmeriMed, and CostaMed have facilities throughout the Riviera Maya, and Hospital Galenia, and Victoria Medical in Cancun. There is also the Hospital General in Playa del Carmen, a state-run facility. Let’s start with Hospiten.

    Hospiten

    Hospiten
    unnamed

The Hospiten Group is an international healthcare network committed to providing the highest quality service, with more than 50 years of experience. With hospitals in five countries, they based their model on efficiency in all practices and services.

Hospiten has two hospitals in the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, and Cancun.

The Playa facility has 23 beds, 2 operating rooms, and a dedicated labor and delivery room. They have over 20 specialists on staff, from Pediatrics to Cardiology to Internal Medicine. They also provide a trauma centre and reconstructive surgeries.

“…my doctor at Hospiten, Dr. Corona, was first class all the way and did a second surgery to fix my broken heel correctly…”

    -Lee K, playa del carmen

Hospiten is the largest and most advanced care center in the immediate area, English is widely spoken here, and the hospital is accustomed to treating locals, tourists, expats, and foreigners.

Hospiten Cancun offers 54 beds with 2 operating rooms. A room dedicated to delivery and labor is available and features an Intensive Care Unit. Other specialties include Fetal Medicine and Diagnostic Imaging. With over 40 specialists and professionals, you can be assured your needs will be well looked after.

    AmeriMed

    Amerimed Hospitals

AmeriMed is the first hospital group specializing in medical tourism and complying with North American standards of care. Their group comprises hospitals in Cancun, Cozumel, and a new Hospital in Playa del Carmen.

AmeriMed Cancun offers a wide range of routine and emergency services. Their Intensive Care and Neonatal Care units are among the best in the state. Their bilingual support and administration staff make your registration process a breeze.

Amerimed Islamed Cozumel has been equipped with state-of-the-art technology in diagnostic, resolution, and patient care. They specialize in Trauma care, around-the-clock emergency care, and a thorough put-patient care program. As AmeriMed Cozumel is on an island, they include an air ambulance service.

AmeriMed Playa del Carmen is the new hospital in town. This facility offers the usual medical services such as a 24/7 emergency unit, and check-up process for the entire family. They also provide an ICU, a coronary care unit, and full lab services.

AmeriMed Playa del Carmen also caters to surgical specialties that fit the needs of an aging expat community. Concerns such as Cardiovascular, Ophthalmic, and Oncology can be treated here with expert analysis and care.

    Costamed

    Costamed Cozumel

Costamed Grupo Medico features five locations in the Riviera Maya. From Cancun, all the way down to Tulum Costamed hospitals will keep you healthy.

The Cancun location recently opened for basic services, such as Endoscopy and Covid-19 testing. They also offer a Fibroscan treatment used for the diagnosis of cirrhosis, hepatitis, and other liver diseases.

Costamed Puerto Morales and Costamed Tulum are the only hospitals in their small municipalities, and, as such, offer a limited range of services. There are only two beds, with three more in the emergency ward. One full operating room, three ER rooms, and ambulance service. For such small facilities, they both provide a wide range of specialties, from Cardiology and Dentistry to Ophthalmology and Radiology. They also have a bilingual administration staff to help with payments and billing.

For eleven years Costamed Playa del Carmen has been serving the city, with the only non-stop ambulance service 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. This hospital has 10 beds with three more ER beds, and two in intensive care. They also feature dedicated surgery and delivery rooms, a laboratory, and X-Ray services with 24-hour on-site technicians.

This facility has modern equipment to identify, analyze and diagnose a wide array of symptoms. From MRI’s to ventilators and oxygenation equipment Costamed Playa del Carmen will ensure your health and welfare are well cared for. If there’s an ailment you can get, this well-equipped specialty hospital can treat you for it!

Costamed got its start in 1998 with the Centro Medico de Cozumel. This facility has been the recipient of many international medical accreditations, some of which are the Canadian Healthcare Council and the Mexican Council on Medical Tourism.

Costamed Cozumel Hospital features 19 beds, three ER beds, surgery and delivery rooms, and many others including a Regenerative Medicine Unit. It contains all the services and specialties that her sister hospitals do, and is recognized as a leader in international tourism medicine.

    Hospital Galenia

    Hospital Galenia Cancun

The Galenia Hospital in Cancun has a focus on Medical Tourism and teaching. Medical students in their last years of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nutrition can apply for an Undergraduate Medical Internship.

Concerning Medical Tourism, Hospital Galenia offers first-class facilities, high-tech equipment, and well-trained physicians, all resulting in efficient and compassionate care.

This ground-breaking facility is the first High Specialty Hospital in southeast Mexico. With advanced state-of-the-art equipment and technology, and well-trained accredited medical specialists, they are recognized as a leader in medical education and training.

Hospital Galenia is home to many specialty clinics, including oncology, stem-cell treatments, and a hernia treatment center. Add to that a Hyperbaric chamber, Reproductive and Gynecology treatments, and non-invasive, non-radiation treatment for prostate cancer, this hospital is well prepared to treat any and all patients.

Although the Hospital Galenia accepts insurance claims, ensure your policy allows for admission here. The cost of all the state-of-the-art technology and equipment is not cheap!

    273

    Victoria Medical Cancun

Victoria Medical Cancun is an exclusive facility, and as the Centre for Medical Specialties, they are considered one of the best hospitals in the region. With thirty-five years of experience, they offer care over a plethora of medical issues.

Their intensive therapy unit contains modern equipment and is staffed by highly trained professionals. Similarly, the specialized maternity floor with its neonatal intensive therapy service focuses on the special attention required by the mother and baby.

Victoria Medical Cancun accepts all credit cards and insurance policies. However, dependent on your policy, a deposit may be required at admission.

General Hospital of Playa del Carmen

The state-run Hospital General de Playa del Carmen caters to the local populace through the IMSS, which we discussed in our last article, Health Insurance Programs in Mexico(see here), the public sector health insurance.

The level of care here is mostly first-level, as you would find in almost any clinic back home. There are general specialists on staff in just as many “ologies” as the private facilities, but again, the care, although thorough and competent, is basic. Long waits and up-front fees are the norms here.

    Conclusion

This article is written in conjunction with the previously published “Health Insurance Programs in Mexico”. All these hospitals will gladly accept insurance plans, and most will assist in the preparation and filing of a claim. Be prepared, however, that in some cases a deposit may still be required.

    80915

Should you be covered by IMSS, or not have coverage at all, you will need to pay for services in full before any treatment. This could be very expensive, and negatively affect any recuperation or recovery.

We conducted an informal social media poll on hospital experiences and received a balanced cross-section of reviews. Each of the hospital groups received both positive and negative comments, but the edge seemed to go to Hospiten. I read many other reviews and they too were balanced. It is difficult to say which stands out, as everyone has different expectations, different circumstances, and different tolerances!

The title of this article is which is the Best Hospital and Why, but our observations and opinions should not be offered as fact. In this article, we showed your options of the Best Hospitals in the Riviera Maya, but we leave the “Why” up to you. We welcome and invite you to add your story to this one, good or bad. Perhaps, once compiled, we will have a legitimate winner, with the title of Best Hospital in the Riviera Maya!

Stay safe and healthy, and we hope this information helps you to MEXIFY yourself!

    Health Insurance Programs in Mexico

Mexico has a well managed and efficient Health Care system. Whether you use a private or public option, Health Insurance in Mexico is readily available and affordable. Private health insurance coverage is more expensive, however it does offer access to private hospitals and specialised doctors.

The public sector health insurance, or Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social (IMSS) is funded through the Mexican government and employer and employee payroll taxes. This coverage is available to all Mexican citizens and, for a fee, expats who hold temporary and permanent residency. This option for health insurance in Mexico is more affordable than the private sector.

Though the medical facilities are a bit over-crowded, studies show that 83% of people are satisfied by the services provided by IMSS.

Do I need Extra Health Coverage?

All visitors to Mexico, whether a short-term tourist or a long-term expat, are encouraged to possess some sort of Health Insurance coverage. Many sun-seekers have health insurance programs from their home countries, however, there may be restrictions for international travel.

In this era of Covid-19, many tour operators insist that travellers purchase additional health insurance programs specific for their stay. In this article we will focus on Health Insurance programs available in Mexico.

What Type of Coverage Do I Need?

Relocating to another country entails a lot of consideration and planning, one of the most important factors is your health. You need to feel confident you will receive quality medical care before settling into a new country.

    -mexlaw

There are many Health Insurance providers in Mexico that offer several types of private coverage, and there are many factors to consider when determining your Health Insurance needs in Mexico.

If you are a snowbird, you could select an international coverage which supplements your existing policy from home.

Do you travel extensively? If so, another option is a tailor made policy, designed to fit your specific needs, such as pre-existing conditions or age factors.

Should you plan on living in Mexico full time, an all-inclusive expat policy would be perfect for thorough coverage and access to the finest healthcare options in the country.

Of course, if your needs are basic and you have no existing ailment, the IMSS coverage would be a good option as well.

Whichever option you choose, it is important to understand every detail of your policy. Discuss your needs and expectations with your insurance provider, and ensure that your new policy does not contain any surprises. And make sure your broker is licensed to sell insurance in Mexico!

How Do I Find a Doctor?

There are many well-trained doctors in Mexico, and many of those speak English. Here is a list of things to consider when selecting your doctor…

    • What do you need from your doctor? Is a GP sufficient, or do you require specialised treatment?
    • Will you require house calls?
    • Can you speak Spanish, or do you need your doctor to speak English?
    • Ask members of your expat communities for referrals.
    • Check with your consulate or embassy for a list of doctors.
    • Conduct an on-line search for doctors in your area…many will have reviews and bios.
    • Your insurance provider will usually have a list of doctors, and ones that are approved for pre-billing.
    • Ask for a referral from your doctor back home.

We will be including a future article here on Hospitals In Mexico, but for today’s purpose Hospiten, Amerimed, and Costamed Medical Group have a list of available doctors and specialists in your area.

Can I Get My Prescriptions Filled Here?

The following is an excerpt from an earlier article from Mexify.biz

You’ve made the move to Mexico, and you’re really enjoying the lifestyle. Soon, though, you will need to refill your prescription. It’s very costly and very unreliable to ship your prescription meds from home, and, quite possibly, illegal.

Most medicines are available over the counter, and are much less costly. Be warned, though, that not all medicines are held to the same standards. You could easily take the wrong dosage or even receive the wrong active ingredient.

If you didn’t consult with your doctor at home before you moved, here are some tips to follow…

    • find a doctor and get local pharmacy recommendations
    • choose a well-established pharmacy to obtain higher quality medicines
    • discuss your needs with the pharmacist, they will advise on availability of your medicine
    • a private health insurance carrier can provide access to facilities, drugs, and insurance billing if required

For more information on the types of Healthcare available in Mexico contact us.

    What If I Need Surgery?

Many North Americans travel to Mexico for their surgeries. They combine the medical procedure with a leisure vacation or a house hunting visit. Less wait times and lower costs mean patients can get back to their normal lives much sooner. Many lab tests for services such as ultrasounds, blood work, and even x-rays can be done here in Mexico without a doctors referral.

    • Here are some of the most common surgeries…
    • Hip and Knee Replacement
    • Cosmetic Surgery
    • Dentistry
    • Orthopedic
    • Ocular
    • Cardiovascular
    • Bariatric (Weight Loss)

Should an accident befall you, and you require emergency surgery, the costs could be staggering! If you are covered by IMSS, you will receive adequate care, but may face additional costs associated with your hospital stay.

Private Health Insurance providers will afford you better care in better facilities, with better specialised doctors. Additional costs in this situation may be direct-billed dependent on the extent of your policy coverage.

Treatment cost in Mexico is 50% to 80% less expensive than Canada or the U.S.

Help! I Lost My Teeth and I Can’t Find Them!

I remember driving one time and sensing a sneeze coming on. I rolled my window down just in time to direct that sneeze outside. Unfortunately, my dentures went with it! Fortunately, I had my prescription glasses to help find all the pieces.

    Health Insurance In Mexico
Dental and Eyewear coverage

A visit to the dentist has a very high probability rate. Whether it’s for a toothache, an extraction, or a simple cleaning, a trip to the dentist will be a regular thing. Or, in my case, an orthodontist.

There are many qualified dentists in Mexico, many of whom include specialized services. Dentures, implants, and braces are familiar words on all the Dental Office shingles.

Everything changes as you age, so after getting the mold for my new dentures, I paid a visit to my optometrist. After a quick consultation, I had my glasses re-fitted with a new prescription lens.

My new glasses helped me sign the form, and with my new teeth smiling brightly, I direct-billed for both to my Health Insurance provider in Mexico!

What If I Need to Evacuate?

Even though Mexico has state-of-the-art hospitals and equipment, there may be an emergency requirement for you to fly home for treatment. In the event of a stroke, heart attack, or any serious life-threatening illness, a Medical Evacuation may be required. You may need to be transported to a specialty hospital, or simply require long-term care closer to family.

Many Health Insurance programs in Mexico can include emergency medical evacuation clauses, but many still are limited in destinations. They may read “nearest adequate facility” which could leave you far from home, family, and your doctors.

    Health Insurance
Emergency Medical Evacuation

Another option you may be offered is a Medical Evacuation Membership or Assitance plan. Be wary of these as the companies offering such plans are not regulated, nor do they follow typical insurance laws. You could find yourself with a denied claim and no recourse.

It is important to note here that commercial airlines will not transport anyone in an emergency medical state. An emergency MedEvac is an expensive undertaking, and costs could easily exceed tens of thousands of dollars.

It is also imperative that you understand your insurance policy’s coverage, that it includes the phrase “…hospital of choice…” and covers all out-of-pocket expenses.

    Conclusion

Many expats who live in Mexico, whether as snowbirds or year-round, are in or near retirement age. Although the climate and lifestyle here is beneficial to our health, our bodies tend to develop new aches and pains where the day before there were none. Regardless of your health, the time will come when you need to see a doctor.

If you, like me, have spent anytime in a clinic back home, you are familiar with crowded waiting rooms and long wait times. If you are registered with IMSS here in Mexico you may undergo a similar experience. Although the Emergency Medical Services in Mexico have improved greatly over the last few years, the public hospitals still see a great demand on the efficiency and quality of medical care. And you will be out-of-pocket for many medical expenses.

Private hospitals are less inundated with such a demand, and are able to offer a higher level of efficiency and quality. They have improved facilities and equipment, better trained staff, and increased one-on-one services. Direct-billing to your health insurance provider is a definite plus, as is receiving high quality prescription medicine.

Of course, all these improved services do come at a cost. So, tomorrow, when the new wave of aches and pains arrive, ask your body if it’s worth it…

  • Buy Property in Mexico (All you need to know)

Buy Property in Mexico (All you need to know)

You have been to Mexico many times. You’ve stayed at all-inclusive resorts, perhaps a boutique hotel in town, or rented a condo to enjoy your vacation. You’ve stayed on a short-term basis, or perhaps you’re a snowbird who winters in this beautiful country. Now you’re ready to take the next step. You’ve decided to stop paying someone else’s mortgage, and you are ready to buy property in Mexico.

Whether you’re an American, Canadian, European, or from any country in the world, buying property in Mexico requires much research and patience.

Today we will talk about the ups and downs, the pros and cons, and the process of buying property in Mexico.

    Where to Start…

To begin, you should list your priorities of what your new home will include when you buy property in Mexico:

    • Ocean front or just a view of the ocean?
    • Perhaps jungle vistas?
    • How many bedrooms and bathrooms do you want? Will friends and family visit often?
    • How large of a pool will you have?
    • Is condo living your preference, or do you need more outdoor space?
    • What climate do you prefer?
    • Hot, sunny and humid?
    • A cooler location in the mountains?
    • Rural or urban?
    • Do you want your neighbours to be locals or expats?

These are questions that require specific answers which will allow you to narrow down your search. Once you’ve determined your geographic preference, you can move to the next step in buying property in Mexico.

“Mexico is a very diverse country…desert regions, mountain ranges, there’s tropical rain forests, there’s volcanoes, and there are some places in Mexico that have snow…”

Matt Weatherbee, North American Standards Property Management and sales

How Do I Determine my Budget…

Your budget will depend much on where you have decided to buy property in Mexico. If you decide to live in a rural or mountainous region, your budget will be very low. One hundred thousand dollars in these areas will net you a magnificent hacienda. Conversely, should you explore urban areas near the oceans, that budget will be more suited for a studio apartment facing the adjacent building. Beachfront properties may sell for at least a half-million dollars, with luxury penthouses available for a king’s ransom.

chac mool cancun beach riviera maya

If you have caviar taste on a beer budget, there are but a few financing options. Many banks will only offer mortgages to Residency holders, but the hoops to jump through are many and very small. Private investors will gladly join forces with you, however the terms and interest rates are rarely in your favour.

Have a discussion with your financial institutions at home, and your credible realtor and lawyer here will also offer alternatives and ideas. After all, buying property in Mexico is never a bad investment!

One other thing to remember, property prices are listed in US Dollars. For ease of conversion to your home currency, see the conversion calculator in our article “7 Good things to know after you made the move to Mexico“.

    What’s Next…

In order to maintain a smooth process of buying property in Mexico, you need to select a realtor. They will help you through the process, offer suggestions and tips, and make sure you find the property that fits your criteria. However, again this will require more research. Find a reputable and established agency, with a good track record of sales. There are many social media pages you can research, ask questions, and get feedback from others who have been in your shoes. Conduct an online search in your chosen area. Look at real estate listings and determine the most popular agency. You can also reach out to the agencies with questions to help determine which would be best for your needs. Don’t worry too much about selecting the perfect match, though, if it doesn’t work out go to the next name on the list. Remember, this investment will be for the rest of your life, so don’t rush it.

    I Found the Perfect Property…

Depending on your requirements, finding the perfect property could happen in as little as a week or so, but be prepared to go the long haul. Plan several visits to the area to view properties, or you can have the realtor send pictures and videos. A virtual live walk-through is another option. All these are great methods, but nothing is better than being there. Remember, seeing is believing!

“…(Realtors) have a trusted network of lawyers and notaries, and we’ll check out all the proper documentation for you…”

    MATT WEATHERBEE, NORTH AMERICAN STANDARDS
    PROPERTY MANAGEMENT AND SALES

So you found the right home and you’re going to buy property in Mexico. You have negotiated the terms, agreed on a price, and paid a refundable deposit. Everyone’s happy and excited, but before you break out the bubbly, you need to hire a lawyer. They will conduct a search on the property to ensure that the property is free and clear of any encumbrances, disputes, and liens. This is one of, if not the most important step of the process.

Should you buy a property that is in dispute, then your ownership also becomes part of that dispute. That dispute could be a builder’s lien, questionable ownership, Ejido (communal land) or even Squatter’s Rights. Yes, Squatter’s Rights. If anyone is living on a piece of land for a specific period of time, they have ownership rights.

You see why it is of extreme importance that a real estate lawyer conduct a complete and thorough discovery of your property. Should your realtor tell you that you don’t really need this, or you try and deal directly with the seller, you could lose everything. Follow the process!

    I’m Ready to Close…

The title is free and clear, and you are ready to proceed. An offer letter is drafted, a second non-refundable deposit is made, and a few days before the closing date, the balance of the agreed price is paid. Here you have two options…put the money in an escrow account, or dont.

Escrow services provide a neutral third party which holds the funds in compliance with the instructions of all the parties to an agreement.

Once all documentation is complete and all parties are satisfied, the escrow account holder will distribute the funds as required. If the property is a pre-purchase still under construction or an existing property undergoing renovations, the escrow account will distribute periodic payments to the builders to maintain schedule and budgets. The escrow account holder can be the developer, the realtor, or the lawyer. However, escrow laws are different in Mexico as that the money cannot be held “In Trust”. This means the funds are usually deposited into the personal accounts, which are not insured and susceptible to seizure or liens by creditors.

Should you choose not to use a third party escrow account, you have no protection from unscrupulous sellers, opportunistic lawyers, and may end up holding the…well, not holding anything!

Again, this is why preliminary research is so important. The realtor you choose should provide you with everything you need from finding your property in Mexico all the way through to moving into your property in Mexico!

So, all is good! Your “Buying Property In Mexico” adventure is about to come to an end, and all that’s left is to…..Whoa…..slow down caballeros!! Didn’t anyone tell you about Fideicomiso???

    What the Heck is Fideicomiso…

According to MexLaw website, Fideicomiso is a law which requires “All foreign individuals purchasing property in a restricted zone (within 100 km of the Mexican border or 50 km from the coast) must purchase the property using a fideicomiso (bank trust)“.

When buying property in Mexico, Fideicomiso should be considered by anyone who wants to use their property for personal use only, and are considering obtaining permanent residency.

For those of you who are buying property in Mexico for rental income purposes, and plan on buying more than one property, then creating a Mexican Corporation is the best option. This will avoid the Fideicomiso process and extra expenses, as well as remove the associated restrictions. Once again, obtaining trustworthy and reliable legal services is the key.

“Fideicomiso will cost approximately US$1,900, and on top of that is closing costs, notary and taxes which is six to eight percent.”

    Olga Sinei, NORTH AMERICAN STANDARDS
    PROPERTY MANAGEMENT AND SALES

    Conclusion…

One more thing about Fideicomiso…it was explained to me by Matt Weatherbee of NASPlaya that years ago some multinationals started buying properties on select beachfront locations. After some consideration Mexican authorities realized they would be losing control of their coastline. So, to control all ports of entry, among other reasons, Fideicomiso was implemented.

Buying property in Mexico should not be an ordeal. Partner with a reliable and honest realtor, enlist the services of transparent lawyers, and follow the process as the law dictates. There will be many along the way who will tell you some things are not necessary, or you can do without this or that, or that they have a great deal for you. Remember, all that glitters is not gold, and if it’s too good to be true, it probably is!

Follow your dreams, listen to your soul, and you too, like all of us at Mexify, will be living your best life in a Mexican paradise!

    Hasta luego!

  • Can you live in Mexico for $1,000 a month?

Can you live in Mexico for $1,000 a month?

Like most people, you have probably moved around the block or transferred to a new country a few times.

Do you know how daunting a task can be? Will you easily be able to get the services and products you have become so used to?

You must cancel services, get a new Internet provider, change your address, and do all the other critical personal tasks required to move.

However, once the frenzy dies down, you know your life will continue pretty much as it has.

Now that you have chosen to move to Mexico, your life seems less stressful, and the quality of your life has improved much with the cheaper cost of living.

You can now afford a luxury apartment or new home for what you used to pay back home.

But Can You Live In Mexico on $1,000 a month?

Mexico has long been a good option for expats looking to retire or find a second home – it has a warm climate and a vibrant culture.

But is it possible to live in Mexico on $1,000 a month? It depends on the lifestyle you are looking for.

Live in an expat-centric area like the Riviera Maya; you will pay more to be part of the expats community.

However, those looking for a quieter, more local experience can find modest housing at much lower prices (sometimes rents in Mexico can be $300/month).

You may also take advantage of lower food, transportation, entertainment, and healthcare costs.

Altogether this brings the cost down dramatically, allowing people to enjoy all that Mexico has to offer while sticking close to their $1,000 budget.

How Do Services and Amenities Compare To The United States?

The first thing to remember is that you’re in a foreign country, and what you used to take for granted may take a bit more effort.

If you move to Mexico, there are some extra things to consider, and it’s good to know some tips to help your $1,000 budget go as for as possible.

This article will look at several items of interest that many people overlook or don’t think about when moving to Mexico.

Things To Think About When Moving To Mexico?

    1. How to find a good car in Mexico?
    2. How much should I tip at restaurants in Cancun, Mexico?
    3. Is it easy to get prescriptions filled?
    4. Is it easy to buy real estate in Tulum or other parts of Mexico?
    5. Learn the prices, and make sure you know the exchange rates
    6. What is the best way to send and receive international packages?

    Buying A New Car.

In a nutshell, anyone can buy a car in Mexico. Still, you must be a resident to register it in your name, meaning that as a foreigner, you must own a permanent or temporary resident visa. If you are among the 180-day set, you can buy a vehicle and insure it, but you can’t register it in your name.

It should be painless if you’re content to buy a car right off the lot. However, if you want something that has to be brought in from another dealer, be prepared to wait….and wait.

The good news is that vehicle prices in Mexico are generally much less expensive than back home.

For example, a recent study showed cars usually are, on average, around USD$6,000 less in Mexico.

But, of course, the region you’re in and the exchange rate will impact these numbers, so it is essential to conduct your research.

Once you’ve selected your car and determined the price, you need to consider how to pay for it—everywhere in Mexico, money talks.

If you pay cash, there will be fewer details to be concerned with, and you may even haggle for a lower price.

Unfortunately, due to the laws surrounding repossession, banks are reluctant to finance vehicles.

More and more, however, dealerships are taking on that responsibility, but be ready for very high-interest rates, some up to 25%!

How Much Should I Tip A Waiter?

    download 1

The minimum wage in Mexico is 141.70 pesos (USD$6.98) per workday.

As in most countries, service industry workers in Mexico rely on tips to supplement their income. Some look at the word “tip” as an acronym, “To Insure Promptness”: The better the service, the better the tip.

Many outlets pool all tips with distribution depending on position, others split evenly with all workers, and others allow the worker to keep all their tips received.

There are no hard and fast rules concerning tips, but leaving 15% of your bill is a widely recognized practice.

So who else should I tip? Anyone who provides a service for you is worthy of a tip.

Not just tourist-related positions, restaurants, and bars, but also the hard-working people at your laundromat.

If you have a cleaning service, come in, they also deserve a tip. When the building concierge delivers water jugs to you, say thanks with a lead.

They will all be grateful and appreciative of that little show of respect and respond in kind.

Tipping is a personal choice, however; if you doubt how much to leave, consider the minimum wage. Buen provecho!

Do You Need A Perscription For All Of Your Medicines?

You’ve moved to Mexico, and you’re enjoying the lifestyle. Soon, though, you will need to refill your prescription.

It’s costly, unreliable to ship your prescription meds from home, and, quite possibly, illegal.

Most medicines are available over the counter and are much less costly.

Be wary that not all medications are held to the same standards.

You could take the wrong dosage or even receive a harmful active ingredient.

If you did consult with your doctor at home before you moved, – here are some tips to follow.

    • Find a doctor in Mexico you can trust and get a local pharmacy recommendation.
    • Choose a well-established pharmacy to obtain high-quality medicines.
    • Discuss your needs with the pharmacist; they will advise on the availability of your medicine and if you need a prescription to purchase it.
    • Some healthcare insurance providers can help you find great doctors and hospitals, and some will even cover the cost of your medication.

For more information on the types of Healthcare available in Mexico.

Fortunately, Mexico’s rules and laws surrounding prescription drugs are more relaxed.

I’m Ready To Buy A Property In Mexico

Whether you moved to Mexico recently or you’ve been here for years, many ex-pats decide to buy property rather than rent.

It could be for investment, rental income, or simply a place you can call home. Maneuvering the ins and outs and the legalities of buying real estate in Mexico for expats can be a harrowing ordeal.

In a later episode, we will go into greater depth and detail on this subject, but we will leave you with the top five frequently asked questions.

    1. Is it safe to buy real estate in Mexico…yes but it is crucial to obtain the services of a Mexican real estate attorney…
    2. Can I buy beachfront property in Mexico…yes but the property will be held in a bank trust (fideicomiso) with you as the beneficiary…
    3. Why do I need a real estate attorney…this is the only way to guarantee you receive title to the property…
    4. What function does a Notario Publico serve…it is a government-appointed attorney responsible for registering real estate deeds…
    5. Can the Mexican government take my property…no? Under NAFTA rulings, Mexico cannot expropriate any land unless for a public purpose, such as building a road…

Understand The Exchange Rate in Mexico

    Know before you go!

Regardless of where you’re from, the two currencies most used in Mexico are Pesos and US Dollars.

It’s essential to be aware of the exchange rates of both those monies to your currency. After some time and practice, you will soon be converting the numbers in your head.

You will know how much you just spent on groceries, realize when the taxi driver is charging you too much, and smile when you discover how little things cost here!

    Need a currency converter?
    Look no further.

Many restaurants and bars will show multiple currencies on la cuenta (the bill) for more manageable payment.

Be sure to look it over, however, as there may be additional charges such as a tip added in, an administration fee, or the like.

Study the menu prices so you don’t get surprised when it’s time to pay. Some outlets don’t give you a bill, a handwritten one, or the total, so know before you go!

    Is Gas Expensive in Mexico?

Remember that car you just bought? You will need to put gas in it before going anywhere. Here’s the lowdown on gas stations.

    • follow the lead from the attendants. They may get a commission to direct you to “their” pumps.
    • Establish a form of payment before you do anything. Some less credible outlets may force you to use a credit card. Cash is always accepted, and most stations will ask first.
    • Always check the pump gauges before they start filling your car. Ensure they have been cleared to zero. Again, the more reputable businesses will show you the zeros.
    • Check the final total, and if paying cash, make sure you get the proper change.
    • Get in the habit of standing by your vehicle and watching all that’s happening. You might even get to practice your Spanish!

Should I Mail Everything When Moving To Mexico?

You’ve moved to Mexico, you’re settling into a routine, set up a house in your new home, and now you want to bring some personal belongings from back home.

Regular mail isn’t very reliable, and it may take weeks to get a package if you get it at all. Here are some options you can use for international shipping.

FedEx has international and domestic documents, parcels, and heavyweight shipping options. With FedEx Tools, you can do everything online…check it here.

DHL offers shipping programs and logistical support for businesses. Whether by air, sea, or ground, they have a solution for your shipping needs. See more here.

UPS offers time- and day-definite guarantees on your international shipments. They also provide Value-Added services and a shipment calculator. See all this here.

Many other shipping companies can get your cherished belongings to your new home, so do some research, check to price, and find out what duty and taxes will be required.

Oh, and don’t forget to add insurance to your package when you mail it to Mexico!

Final Take Away On Moving To Mexico on a $1,000 Budget

These are a few expats’ concerns when moving to Mexico.

Maneuvering through daily life in Mexico is relatively easy, and before you know it, you will probably wish you had moved sooner.

You will eventually settle into a beautiful life in paradise, and all of your friends and family will love coming to visit you.

We will leave you with one more thing to consider. The yellow-painted blocks on the streets at intersections are NOT crosswalks; they are warning signs!

Be sure to look both ways, even on one-way streets, and cross only when it is safe.

Drivers tend to be a bit more aggressive here in Mexico.

    10 Vegan Restaurants in Cancun

There are many vegan restaurants in Cancun, some are strictly vegan, while others offer a full menu with vegan options. However the style, you’ll be sure to find your Vegan fix.

    Vegan food in Mexico

In this article we talk about “traditional” Mexican food. These dishes are prepared with a variety of meat, such as beef, chicken, pork, and fish. In Vegan restaurants, these dishes are still prepared in the “traditional” way, with plant-based or soy products replacing the meat.

I’m sure you will agree that these “traditional” Mexican foods are still very “authentic”!

As outlined above, preparing traditional Mexican food as vegan is as simple as leaving the meat out, or replacing it with a different non-meat product. For example, the breakfast chilaquile has chicken and eggs but when you leave out the pollo, it’s still a chilaquile, only vegan-style. Enchiladas are filled with carne (meat) or pescado (fish) and cheese, beans and vegetables.

Using any Vegan meat as a substitute keeps the original flavour, but doesn’t change the tradition. Have you tried Portobello tacos? Delicious!
